PYRO, 20TEN JOIN FORCES FOR NEW RENAULT UK CLIO CUP JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

Multiple Renault UK Clio Cup title winner Team Pyro has announced it will team up with the 20Ten Racing squad to run a three-car outfit in the new Renault UK Clio Cup Junior championship in 2017.

UK Clio Cup Junior will be for 14 to 17-year-old drivers in the same cars raced in the senior UK Clio Cup which features alongside the high-profile British Touring Car Championship.

The cars will have two simple modifications to ensure they meet strict Junior racing regulations:

◾ECU that limits the car to a five-speed gearbox (not six-speed) and a top speed of 100mph

◾Road tyres: Michelin's high-performance Pilot Sport 3 (limited to four per race event to help limit costs)

The inaugural championship will be held in 2017. A 12-race calendar (six events) will be announced soon…

Meanwhile '20Ten with Pyro' expects to start testing young drivers within the next month after sufficient serious enquiries from interested parties persuaded the two to join forces.

'This in effect will be the Junior arm to our UK Clio Cup operation,' commented Pyro Team Principal Mark Hunt.

'The Junior concept that Renault Sport has announced is clearly generating huge interest and discussion in motor racing paddocks and the 14 to 17-year-olds are absolutely going to love this car. It really moves Junior motor racing onto a whole new level for youngsters in terms of engineering excellence and driver development.

'We, though, are at capacity with our UK Clio Cup commitments and other projects such as track day activities so bringing in 20Ten to run the Junior team but with our engineering input is the best all-round solution.'

20Ten boss Simon Hunt said: 'We're very happy to be doing this in partnership with Pyro who have been the name to beat for many years in Clio Cup racing both in the UK and overseas. We have also enjoyed some great moments in the senior UK Clio Cup and have a sound reputation for bringing on young new drivers – this therefore is a perfect fit.'

The 20Ten-Pyro news follows on from top BTCC and UK Clio Cup team Ciceley Motorsport's announcement that it is also planning a three-car team in the new Junior category.
