Failing Auburn initially thrived under the direction of salesman E.L. Cord, and the late twenties saw a 1300% sales increase. Convertibles accounted for more than a quarter of the sales and most of their coachwork done as was this one by the Limousine Body of Kalamazoo, Michigan, thus explaining the A designation that distinguished its Custom line. Features of this Auburn include a free-wheeling transmission that temporarily disengages when the driver lifts off the accelerator, dual side mounts, turn signals and a rear trunk. It was fully restored in the sixties and underwent a cosmetic restoration in 2010.
This 1931 Auburn is powered by a 98 horsepower, 268 cubic-inch inline eight-cylinder Lycoming engine coupled to a 3-speed synchromesh manual transmission riding on a 127-inch wheelbase and had an original selling price of $1395.
Ownership history is known back to the early 1960s and it was featured in the spring 1967 issue of Automotive Quarterly. This car was awarded ACD certification-A507, which verifies that the engine, chassis and body are not only correct but are original to this car.
A lot of names in automotive history have disappeared, but few command the respect of those made by the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg conglomerate. E. L. Cord headed the organization and rescued Auburn by transforming its image from a staid, conservative family car to a flashy car for people who appreciated quality.
