Wayne-Carini-Named-Honorary-Chairman-of-the-Grand-Ascent  Wayne Carini, popular host of the Velocity HD Channel's 'Chasing Classic Cars' will serve as Honorary Chair for the 2012 Grand Ascent, a revival of the historic Hershey Hill Climb featuring more than 50 vintage race cars June 8 and 9 at the Hotel Hershey, it was announced today by The Elegance at Hershey, the event organizers.

In addition to driving in the Grand Ascent competition, Carini will be taping an episode of 'Chasing Classic Cars' for later airing on the Velocity HD channel that is part of the Discovery Channel, according to race chairman David L. George II, a member of the Elegance at Hershey Board and Grand Ascent Race Director.

'We are extremely pleased and excited about Wayne's active participation in this year's Grand Ascent,' George said. 'In addition to driving his 'Bathtub Porsche' up the hill and taping his show, Wayne will join a host of celebrities in talking spectators for rides up the hill over the lunch hour to raise money for The Elegance at Hershey charities,' George explained.

Carini is no stranger to vintage car buffs across the country and around the world. His show, 'Chasing Classic Cars' is must-see viewing for millions of fans each week as he seeks out and restores some of the most interesting and unique classics available.

With a lifetime of experience in automobile restoration under his belt, Carini's lengthy resume includes body and paint work on rare car collections owned by the likes of David Letterman, tennis great Ivan Lendl and the DuPont Family. He's been featured in The New York Times, numerous automobile magazines and starred in two hour-long television specials for Discovery's HD Theater Channel, Monterey Week and The World's Most Expensive Cars.

Carini's three companies in Portland, Connecticut see some of the world's finest cars pass through his garages: F40 Motorsports buys and sells vintage and classic automobiles; Continental Auto Ltd is a collision shop specializing in high end and exotic car repair, and Carini Carozzeria is the restoration shop where Wayne spends most of his time.

While he loves restoring cars to perfection, Carini's personal preference for unrestored, original cars shines through in the Chasing Classic Cars TV series. Often shown in the elite 'Preservation Class' at concourse events nationwide, Carini's increasingly rare cars are the focus of his private collection, with an emphasis on his first love, the Ferrari.

The Grand Ascent on Friday June 8 and Saturday June 9 is part of The Elegance at Hershey weekend of vintage and collector car events that raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), the AACA Museum and the AACA Library and Research Center in Hershey.

Sanctioned by the Vintage Sports Car Club of America (VSCCA), the Grand Ascent pays homage to what was once one of the country's most famous hill climb events. More than 50 vintage cars – many pre-World War II -- roar up the old road to the Hershey Hotel in timed competition, this year expanding to two days of exhibition racing. In addition to Carini, last year's Honorary Chairman, former Philadelphia Eagles coach Dick Vermeil returns to the Grand Ascent course, this year driving his father's completely restored open- cockpit 1926 sprint race car. Also returning to the challenging Hershey course is famed racer George Wintersteen.

For the first time in years, spectators at The Grand Ascent will be able to walk up a re-opened path from the start line to turn one, along a ¼-mile plus straightaway that sees the cars reach their highest speeds, George noted. The 7-tenths mile Hershey course with its 200 foot elevation and five serious corners, once hosted the country's largest hill climb event that included a number of famous drivers like Janet Guthrie, Al Loquasto and Oscar Koveleski, among others.

Also new this year will be test drives by Lincoln, title sponsor for the Elegance at Hershey, with the company providing a donation to JDRF for each test drive taken. Open pits, shuttle bus service to and from special spectator areas, a large vendors midway, unique car displays and food concessions are also part of this exciting event.

Tickets to the Grand Ascent are just $10 per day, with ages 15 and under free and free parking is provided. Entrance to the Grand Ascent is located at Boathouse Road, off Route 39, 100 yards north of the intersection with Hersheypark Drive. One of the highlighted features of the 2012 Gathering will be steam-powered automobiles. At the end of the 19th century, steam was king—and proven. It powered industrial machinery, ships and railroad locomotives. It was only natural that steam was used to power early automobiles. The most famous of these was the Stanley (shown above) but another well-known steam car was built in Cleveland—the White—and Locomobile began as a steam car.
