| Sports and competition cars grab pole position at Bonhams' new location on the Quail Lodge grounds
International bidders assembled in the Bonhams tent, aided by telephone, absentee and online bidding, to create a truly competitive atmosphere at Bonhams 15th annual sale – the longest running sale of an international auction house during the Monterey Car Week.
In addition to the sale of the ex-GTC Gulf Team Davidoff McLaren F1 GTR 'Longtail' FIA GT Endurance Racing Coupe other headlining cars included:
• The ex-Filipinetti/Dominique Martin Team ZITRO, 1966 Ford GT40 at $2.2 million.|
Uniquely, Bonhams offered not only motorcars but motorcycles, automobilia and jewelry at Quail Lodge. Highlights included: The trio of rare Crocker V-Twin motorcycles that all sold to a private collection in Asia Pacific for approximately $300,000 each. • A beautifully restored 1937 Brough Superior SS100, which made $203,000.
• An extremely rare Lalique 'Renard' fox mascot that made a new world record at almost $340,000.
Other interesting lots included the unique Art Deco 1941 Tatra T87 Aerodynamic Saloon that exceeded all estimates selling for $280,000 after spirited bidding, while the 1970 BMW CSL Group 2 Coupe realized $214,000. In all, Bonhams' two-day sale during the world-famous Monterey Car Week was another success for the worldwide auction house. Said Group CEO Malcolm Barber, 'This was a wonderful way to celebrate our 15th anniversary auction on the peninsula – we welcomed old friends and new faces into our spacious new facility. This followed a week-long activity commencing with our sponsorship of the exciting Pre-Historic Races at Laguna Seca and hosting the Quail Rally breakfast.' The extensive Bonhams car auction calendar moves to September where the UK team will be conducting their next auctions at the Beaulieu International Autojumble and the world-famous Goodwood Revival meeting. Catalogs are now online at http://www.bonhams.com/cars. For a complete list of sales results for the Quail Lodge auction, visit http://www.bonhams.com/quail.
