The Alfa Romeo 1900 was the company's first successful post-war Model, however, it was the next offering - the 1.3-liter Giulietta - which established the 'small car with big performance' formula that the Milanese would follow from then on. The Giulietta arrived in 1954 and at first, demand outstripped supply, causing Alfa to rethink its production strategy and become, for the first time, a high-volume manufacturer. To finance the development of the Giulia, Alfa Romeo had some bonds and created a lottery system that rewarded winners with a free car. Production of the Sedan had been delayed, so Alfa Romeo had Bertone create the Sprint, or Coupe, for the lottery winners. The car was displayed at the 1954 Torino Auto Show where it met with the approval of enthusiasts.
The Giulietta Sprint originally came as a Coupe, but was later joined by Berlina and Spider versions. The Giulietta Spider wore coachwork designed and built by Pininfarina, and would continue virtually unchanged in 1.6-liter Giulia guise when the latter joined the Alfa line-up in 1962.
This particular Giulia Sprint was delivered in January of 1963 to Hoffman Motor Car Company in New York City. It has recently been given an extensive restoration that totaled over $65,000.
This car is powered by a 1570cc dual overhead cam inline 4-cylinder engine fitted with 2-Barrel Solex Carburetors and produces 92 horsepower. It has finned aluminum brakes and a five-speed manual gearbox.By Daniel Vaughan | Oct 2016
