In 1924, Pierce-Arrow introduced the Model 80. It was a smaller model than the traditional Pierce-Arrow and was meant to appeal to a wider audience. It was less complex and easier to produce, meaning it ventured away from Pierce-Arrow's traditional methods of construction, which were time and labor-intensive. As such, their production costs were high and they had low production volume. The Model 80 was intended to change this and increase the number of Pierce-Arrow models sold.
The Model 80 was continuously improved during its production lifespan. It featured four-wheel vacuum-powered brakes by 1927. In 1928, the model was renamed the Model 81, and further distinguished by smaller headlamps for a single year. A new emblem was put on the Pierce-Arrow radiator (at one time it was thought to be the Pierce family crest, but this was later denied by Mrs. Percy Pierce).
In 1928, Pierce-Arrow produced nearly 5,000 examples of the Model 81. This particular example wears Sedan coachwork painted in Desert Sand with black fenders and a Pyramid Gray beltline, roof, and wheels. It rides on artillery-style wheels that had pinstriping and bright hubcaps. There is a rare set of 'New York City' headlamps, an archer mascot, and a rear-mounted spare tire. The interior has gray cloth front seat upholstery and a new rubber front floor mat. There is a wooden dash panel, wood window frames, and a wooden steering wheel.
In 1998, this vehicle was awarded a Junior National First Prize by the AACA. In 2009, this Model 81 Five-Passenger Sedan was offered for sale at the Automobiles of Amelia Island Auction presented by RM Auctions. It was estimated to sell for $30,000 - $40,000 and offered without reserve. It was sold for a high bid of $34,100, including the buyer's premium.By Daniel Vaughan | Mar 2009
