The year 1931 was the last year for the famous flat-front Packard radiator, which was the company's durable trademark. This handsome example is powered by Packard's famous 385 cubic-inch straight-eight engine coupled to a four-speed transmission; it featured automatic chassis lubrication and was the first Packard to use a fuel pump in place of the old vacuum-tank system.
This Packard Custom Eight Sport Phaeton has a history that is known back to the 1950s when it was owned by Owen Fraking of New York. It remained with Mr. Fraking for decades; after his passing in 2000, it was sold to an individual in Connecticut. In 2007, it was purchased by a Canadian collector who set about having it restored to its original condition. The work took over two years to complete. The body was removed, the chassis disassembled to the last nut and bolt, and the frame itself sandblasted, primed, and refinished, with no repairs being found necessary. The braking system, steering, and suspension were fully disassembled, then carefully rebuilt. It was finished in black with a green chassis and undercarriage, and a black interior and canvas top.
Accessories found on this car include painted disc wheels, 'Adonis at the Well' radiator mascot, a radiator stone guard, and a rear-mounted spare. There is a two-piece rear bumper and carrying bracket.
After the restoration was completed, it was shown in 2009 at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. The following year, it became part of the James F. Scott private collection.
