1932 MG F-Type Magna Tourer

  • Chassis Number: F0700
  • Engine Number: 946 AF
The MG F-Type Magna was introduced in 1931 and produced for just two years with approximately 1,250 units sold. They came with several advanced features including an unusually low chassis with 'underslung' rear suspension and MG's first six-cylinder engine. The chassis was largely intended for sporty touring and most examples were fitted with custom coachwork. The most famous examples were the factories own 'F2' roadsters, which achieved success in rally events during the 1930s and earned many speed records in highly modified form.

This MG F-Type Magna was built in Abingdon, England, in January of 1932 and was featured in the April issue of 'Light Car' that same year, complete with photographs. It went to coachbuilder Jarvis of Wimbledon, in London, England where it received coachwork and then used as a demonstrator for that MG dealer.

The current owner purchased the car in Melbourne Beach, Florida in 1992 and began a 12 year restoration. All new and used parts used in the restoration, including paint, were sourced in England to ensure authenticity.

The engine type is in-line 6-cylinder with a single overhead cam, which is driven by a front mounted generator. The engine produces about 90 horsepower with the supercharger or around 70 horsepower using twin SU carburetors. The car was rebuilt in the 1960s, including the installation of a period-correct aftermarket Arnott supercharger. Three decades later, in the 18-year ownership of Tom Metcalf of Mansfield, Ohio, it was fully restored, reportedly using only U.K.-sourced authentic parts. It is finished in Saratoga Red bodywork, has painted wire wheels, a folding windscreen, and dual Brooklands racing screens. There is leather-trimmed dual bucket seats and a machine-turned dashboard, with instruments housed within octagonal bezels.

Original parts, including engine, gearbox, instruments, body tub, sheet metal, radiator and shell, supercharger, interior, wheels, tires and headlamps were all sourced from England.

Specifications include:

- Straight six overhead cam, supercharged, 1,271 cc engine.
- Vane-type Arnott supercharger, nose mounted & crank driven.
- Gate 4-speed ENV gearbox.
