Susquehannock Trail ProRally
June 2003The 2003 STPR, as always, was an amazing event. Despite the rainy weather, canceled stages, and muddy conditions (we had to hike about 2 miles to make it to the spectator areas) we had a blast! We were a little worried that the recent death of a spectator at another SCCA Rally event a few weeks ago was going to limit the spectator viewing areas, and we were right. It made it harder to get to where we were going, and harder to see due to tighter rules and regulations, but as that first car went past at break-neck speeds out mouths dropped. These cars are amazing and they take a beating on these courses. Its amazing how fast these drivers are able to maneuver their vehicles in any condition that is presented to them.
The night rally, in my opinion, is a true test of skill and insanity. Before you ever see the bouncing lights of the vehicles, you hear the vehicles engine as it is quickly shifted through all its gears. The bright lights follow the noise quickly. At what seems like an eternity, the car finally catches up with the noise and the lights. A whirl wind and a blur is all that is left as it streaks past. Another minute or two goes past before the dirt begins to settle.
I envy the drivers, workers, and mechanics. To me, there would be nothing more blissfully then being able to challenge yourself and the car on these roads.
The third round (of nine) for the 2003 season. A highly competitive of SCCA and FIA Performance Rally cars from across North America and the World will compete on the wickedly fast, smooth, dirt and gravel roads near the famous ‘Grand Canyon of the East' in North central Pennsylvania. This 27th anniversary running of 'STPR' is sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA). The SCCA ProRally Championship series is presented by Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, and Subaru of America.
