From the collection of Mr. McMullen, come these photos of the 1984 SCCA STPR ProRally. Most of the photos were taken at the creek crossing, now known as the Subaru Spalsh.
Some of the differences noted, besides the hair, clothes, and cars (although some of the vehicles are still being run today) is the spectator viewing areas. Those were the days when people could stand as close as they wanted and the responsibility would fall on them if something were to happen. There were of course rules, just not as strict.
These are great action photos of the 1984 rally!
Every first full weekend of June in Wellsboro, PA begins a long enduring race of approximately 80 vehicles. This SCCA sponsored event allows spectators to view a number of stages at different times throughout the day. The course begins at The Green in Wellsboro on Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. and takes about 14 hours to complete. Competitors cover a total of 315 miles, including 145 competitive miles in 10 stages. Rally teams travel through two counties on generally smooth and twisty Pennsylvania State Forest roads, at times bordering the famous Grand Canyon of the East located 10 miles west of Wellsboro. All vehicles are sent out in 1-2 minute increments. Since there is not a limit on speed, some cars will reach 100+MPH.
