In 1956 and 1957, the Lotus XI dominated its class. In 1958, however, Eric Broadley built the Lola Mark 1, which was smaller and lighter and able to beat the Lotus XI. Colin Chapman then (1959) built the Lotus 17 to be a 'Lola beater'. Len Terry warned Chapman that his 'Chapman' front suspension would not work. He was correct in his warning, but also he was fired. On his own, Terry corrected the problem that, eventually, Chapman had to adopt, though too late for the 1959 season. This would eventually make the Lotus 17 a Lola 1 killer.Also photographed at :
