This 300SL Gullwing was originally purchased by Clifford S. Heinz, Jr., the grandson of Henry J. Heinz, founder of Heinz Foods. The SL stands for 'Sport Light.'
The Gullwing is powered by an overhead-cam, fuel-injected, inline, 183 cubic-inch, six-cylinder engine developing 190 horsepower. This car is capable of 0-60 mph in 7.2 seconds and has a top speed of 152 mph. It is fitted with a four-speed manual transmission. It has rack-and-pinion steering, front independent/rear swing axle suspension with four-wheel finned drum brakes. This 2,860-pound vehicle sold for $12,000 in 1955.
The beauty of the Mercedes-Benz Gullwing earned such fans as Elvis Presley and Sophia Loren.
The current owners purchased this vehicle in January of 2008.
