The Bugatti Type 49 was an enclosed touring ca similar to the earlier Type 44. Produced from 1930 through 1934, about 470 examples were manufactured. The Type 49 was the last of the early eight-cylinder Bugatti line, which began with the Type 30, though its gearbox would later be reused on the Type 55. The Type 49 featured a straight-eight engine of 3.3-liters displacement. Bore and stroke were 72mm by 100mm, and three valves per cylinder were used with a single overhead camshaft. This example was re-bodied by Beutler and Co., of Thun, Switzerland, in 1947. It was imported into the United States in 1958 and wound up in Michigan in the mid-eighties. The current owner purchased it in October of 2006, and restored it in his shop.
In 2010, this Bugatti was brought to Gooding & Company's Scottsdale Auction where it was estimated to sell for $275,000 - $325,000. As bidding came to a close, the lot had been sold for the sum of $264,000, inclusive of buyer's premium. Also photographed at :
