Change is inevitable and over the past few years, the Concorso Italiano has had its share of change. The long-established event has spent the last 28 editions being held on Friday of Monterey Automobile Week. This year, and for the foreseeable future, the event will be held on Saturday. By moving the event to Saturday, individuals that currently attend the Quail Motorsport Gathering on Friday will now have the opportunity to visit Concorso Italiano the following day.
Since 2009, the event has been held at the Laguna Seca Golf Ranch. Between 2003 and 2007, the Black Horse Golf Course in Seaside was Concorso's home. It offers breath-taking panoramic views of the Monterey Bay with long rolling fairways and magnificently manicured lawn. After having undergone a multi-million dollar renovation, Concorso returned this year to that venue. 'We're very excited about working with Bayonet Black Horse and the City of Seaside again,' said Concorso Italiano President Tom McDowell. 'We look forward to bringing the event back to its roots of sorts, and anyone who attended Concorso Italiano at Black Horse can attest to its natural beauty and expansive views of Monterey Bay.' Along with pristine views, the location is hospitable for those attending and displaying their vehicles. It offers easy entry and exit, especially for the many low-clearance vehicles that were not designed for off-road trekking.
Concorso Italiano is a one-day event that celebrates the engineering and beauty of Italian cars. There appeared to be more than 800 vehicles and motorcycles on display with crowds that appeared to exceed the 6000 mark. This year, the feature was the 100 Years of Maserati and the Cars of Zagato. One of the many highlights was a Lamborghini 5-95 Zagato that had never before been seen in the United States. It was flown from the factory in Italy to be delivered to its American owner. Other featured Zagato cars included an Aston Martin DB AR1, Aston Martin V12 Zagato America, Aston Martin DB9 Spyder Centennial Zagato, Aston Martin DB7 Zagato, Ferrari 575 GTZ, Ferrari 550 Barchetta Zagato, and an Alfa Romeo TZ3 Stradale. Never, have so many Zagato's recent creations appeared together. The crowd of Italian car enthusiasts were treated to a drive-by of each car while Andrea Zagato shared his thoughts on their design.

The Concours d'Elegance at Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens
The inaugural Concours d'Elegance at Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens was help on September 21st, 2014. The event was organized by many of the individuals who had made the Glenmoor Gathering of Significant vehicle, led by Executive Director and car Selection Chairman David W. Schultz, a success for 18 years. Mr. Shultz was also this year's Chief Judge at the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance and has served as the president of the Classic Car Club of America. The Glenmoor Concours came to an end in 2012 due to 'simple economics' as described by Myron Vernis, the general manager of the Glenmoor Country Club. Without a venue, the team went exploring for a location that could be a worthy backdrop to the world-class vehicles that had made the Glenmoor Gathering a success. What they found was the Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens, located in Akron, Ohio.
The Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens
F.A. Seiberling founded the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in 1898, naming it after Charles Goodyear, the inventor of the vulcanization process for rubber. As the Industrial Revolution was transforming the very fabric of our nation during the turn of the 20th century, the entrepreneurial spirit of innovators and visionaries like F.A. Seiberling flourished. The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company soon became the world's largest rubber company and Akron became the 'Rubber Capital of the World.'
As Seiberling's fortune continued to grow, as did his family, more space was needed. The answer was Stan Hywet Hall, which was constructed between 1912 and 1915, and is one of the finest examples of the American Country Estate movement. Stan Hywet, is Old English for stone quarry, the property's most prominent natural feature when the land was purchased.
Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (August 17, 2014)
-- Excited cheers echoed across the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links Sunday when a 1954 Ferrari 375 MM Scaglietti Coupe was named Best of Show at the 64th annual Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. The car, owned by Jon Shirley of Medina, Washington, was the first postwar car to take the top award at the prestigious event in nearly five decades. It was also the first Ferrari to win.
'This is a road-going Ferrari, and it has had quite the famous life having been designed by Sergio Scaglietti for Roberto Rossellini,' said Chairman Sandra Button. 'Its design was also trend-setting. So it is fitting that this is our first postwar winner in many years.' The last postwar car to be named Best of Show was a 1964 Maserati Mistral Coupé, which topped contenders back in 1968.
When asked about the significance of the win by his postwar car, Shirley said, 'I just hope it means that some more will have the chance to do the same thing. There are some wonderful coachbuilt postwar cars, and I think the owners should bring them here and try for the Best. I've won Best of Show before but this was really a special thrill to do it with this car.' Shirley, the former president of Microsoft, previously won in 2008 with a 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Touring Berlinetta.
The Quail Rally
One of the earliest events that took place during Classic Car week in Monterey, Ca was The Quail Rally which began at the Quail Lodge golf course, the location of the Motorsport Gathering held later in the week. The tour travels to several wineries and locations for beautiful scenery, fine wine and good food.
Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion
The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, the 'museum in motion', has become a cornerstone of Monterey's annual Classic Car Week. This year was the 40th anniversary of the annual event, with 550 historically- and period-correct racing cars competed over four days within 15 different race groups. The featured celebration were the Maserati centennial celebration and the 50th anniversary of the Ford Mustang. For its 40th year, the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion once again proved to be one of the world's premier historic racing events and a centerpiece of the Monterey Classic Car Week.
'Many different shapes and sizes' could be considered the theme for most of the racing groups. Every group showed ingenuity in mechanical prowess and aesthetic design, and gave a glimpse into the evolution of motorsports. With so many different racing categories spread over several days, there are racing groups to satisfy many different racing addictions. Group 1A housed pre-1940 cars, with the earliest being a 1911 National 40. This was a very diverse group of cars, from foreign to domestic, and from a 4 door Lagonda 2 Litre Speed Touring car to a 3 wheeled Morgan Super Aero. The fastest car in this group was the 1929 Bentley 4.5-Liter LeMans driven by Bruce McCaw. Richard Jeffery came in second with his 1936 Triumph Special 9; his best lap time was a second faster than McCaws best lap, which made for some very spirited racing. Jeffery's fastest lap average was 54 mph, which was much different than the speeds seen in other groups, such as the CanAM cars, which had several cars averaging speeds of over 90 mph. The fastest car in this group was the ex-John Follmer Shadow DN4 driven by Craig Bennett. Sharing similar decibel levels were the TransAM cars which was overrun by Chevy Camaros and Ford Mustangs. Three AMC Javelins, a Ford Falcon, Dodge Challenger, a Pontiac Firebird, and two Mercury Cougars made up the remained of the 41 car field. Although the Mustangs and Camaro's were mighty in numbers, it was an AMC Javelin driven by Ken Epsman which finished in first place. He was followed by 3 Mustang Boss 302's taking the next three spots, followed by 4 Chevy Camaros taking 5th - 8th place.
On and Off the Track
The legends of motorsport is not solely reserved for the track, as many legendary drivers were often seen throughout the reunion, some racing while others were spectating. Sir Stirling Moss, one of the sport's greatest drivers and most recognizable names, made a stir as an honored guest. 'It's wonderful to come to events like the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion and be surrounded by like-minded people,' said Moss, who retired from racing (vintage cars) when he was 83 and turns 85 in September. 'There are many people here who weren't even born when I stopped racing (professionally), yet they are so polite and respectful; it makes me feel very good.' Moss and recently retired Scottish driver Allan McNish (three-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, most recently in 2013) entertained enthusiasts at a lunch break 'picnic', telling stories and taking questions from the audience.

More Than 250 Cars on View for Picture Perfect Day and 4th Successful Year at New Location

Blessed by near perfect weather, on Sunday, July 27th, the 36th Annual Concours d'Elegance of America at the Inn at St. John's in Plymouth welcomed continuous crowds all day to the beautiful grounds, making its fourth year at its new home a success. More than 250 magnificent vehicles were on display for the public under blue skies. The Concours brought great diversity to the show field this year, featuring Jet-Age pickups, vintage drag bikes, the cars of Oscar Davis, and the work of designer Virgil Exner along with the American and European Classics.
Carmel-By-The-Sea Concours on the Avenue
Carmel-by-the-Sea's whimsical architecture, inspired by Arthur Rackham's illustrations for children's fairy tales, provided a setting for the Carmel-By-The-Sea Concours on the Avenue. This is the latest addition to the prestigious group of events that make up the area's internationally known Monterey Peninsula ten-day collector car gathering, celebrating the finest in automotive design and engineering. Carmel-by-the-Sea's world-famous Ocean Avenue was closed to traffic and eighteen blocks of downtown was filled with collector cars and related motorized fun. A fascinating mix of American and foreign cars were showcased in front of a backdrop of charming shops, critically acclaimed restaurants and numerous galleries.
The Carmel-By-The-Sea Concours on the Avenue focused on vehicles not usually seen during this ten-day period. The cars included a variety of legendary vehicles. Well over 175 cars were on display in groups of juried classed during Carmel-By-The-Sea Concours on the Avenue. These included Luxury Cars, Muscle Cars, Hot Rods and Sporting Cars. Micro Cars and others were highlighted vehicles from the sublime to the spectacular. Selections were based on a variety of factors, including authenticity, originality, and provenance. Additional consideration was given to cars that inspired youthful drams, interesting stores and the hard-to-define fun factor. Class and major awards were presented in the late afternoon.
City of Northville Preview Party
The Concours d'Elegance of America at St. John's, a world-class exhibition of Classic, rare, and magnificent automobiles, has a distinguished history of showing some of the most fascinating, beautiful and unique vehicles from different eras. One of the events preceding the concours was the
City of Northville Preview Party
. Historic downtown Northville displayed several Concours-quality vintage automobiles, many of which are past Concours d'Elegance of America show cars. Along with show cars, visitors were treated to swing music in Northville's beautiful town square.
Italian Happening at St. Johns Concours
This event, held on the day before the Concours d'Elegance of America at St. John's in Plymouth, enjoyed great weather and an equally impressive turn-out of auto enthusiasts. In attendance were cars from Lamborghini, Ferrari, Lancia, Dual Ghia, DeTomaso, and over 70 Alfa Romeo's. Along with a good amount of quantity, there was a great deal of quality. There was a plethora of examples that helped paint a picture of vehicles designed and produced in the country of Italy.
An Alfa Romeo Giulietta SS in attendance was the second of four SSZ prototypes produced. Only two still exist. It was the first car with a tilt front, has an early low nose configuration, lightweight body panels, and perplex windows. There was a great turn-out of competition Alfa GTA's. A sleek and exotic DeTomaso Mangusta rested in close proximity to a pair of DeTomaso Pantera's and was closely flanked by brightly colored Lamborghini's. Along with the modern Lamborghini's, there were three Lamborghini Jalpa's. The Jalpa's were the replacement for the Lamborghini Silhouette and they wore styling courtesy of Bertone who had used the styling-cues from the Silhouette. The result was a super car that was not as angular as its predecessor but with a more modern appeal. Like many other Lamborghini's, the name Jalpa was borrowed from a breed of fighting bulls. An eight-cylinder engine was mounted mid-ship providing 255 horsepower to the rear wheels.
With this being the second edition of this event, we did not expect it to be as good as it was. We were pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed the enthusiasm and turn-out.
Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix
2014 was the 32nd edition of the annual Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix. The Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix (PVGP) is the nation's largest vintage race event and a 10-day festival of car shows, races and motorsport activities. 'The Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix is all about keeping the history of cars alive while supporting two very important charities, Allegheny Valley School and the Autism Society of Pittsburgh,' said Dan DelBianco, Executive Director of the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix.
The story with the 2014 Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix presented by the Greater Pittsburgh Automobile Dealers Foundation began with the weather. The practice and qualifying session was a challenge, with rain throughout much of the day. The volunteers stepped up in grand fashion to redirect traffic, protect the golf course and get the show underway. The following day - the day of the race - had nearly perfect weather.
Every year the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix selects a car to be honored as the Marque of the Year. This year's Marque was Mini, and a special Mini race was held for Vintages up through 1972. The last time Mini was marque was back in 2003. Mini's of all years were featured throughout all ten days of the event. The car show at Schenley Park saw over 300 Mini owners and enthusiasts participating in the celebration of the Mini.
PVGP Downtown Parade & Car Display
Nestled among the skyscrapers several of downtown's most prominent addresses opened their courtyards for a sparkling preview of the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix weekend's shows and races. The Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix hosted a parade and 4 distinct car displays in downtown Pittsburgh.
The parade started at Station Square, where cars will stage in the parking lot next to the Gateway Clipper.
In 2013 this event netted nearly $15,000 for our charities!
Waterfront Car Cruise
The Grand Prix's Waterfront Car Cruise has grown in popularity every year since it was moved to the Waterfront in 2001. Each year you can see more and more different and unique cars. Located in the parking lot area between Steak ‘n Shake and First Commonwealth Bank along East Waterfront Drive it's one of the largest specialty cruises in Pittsburgh. Located a few miles from Schenley Park it's a perfect warm-up for the vintage races on the upcoming weekend.
There were nearly 750 cars on display at the annual cruise at the Waterfront in Homestead. The car show took place from 5:00 until 9:00 PM in the parking lot along Waterfront Drive.
For those who are unfamiliar with a cruise – it is basically a large car show open to anyone who wants to show off their ride -that includes old cars, new cars, trucks and motorbikes. You don't actually cruise around, but upon arrival you park immediately and become part of the show. The PVGP Car Cruise is a fantastic place for auto aficionados, hot rodders, gearheads, car crazy people as well as families to gather for a few hours and enjoy the cars, the people and the stories.
PVGP Historics at Pitt-Race Complex
The PVGP Historic Races at the Pitt-Race Complex (previously known as BeaveRun) started in 2004 and has grown over the past decade into a vintage race event that stands alone. Pittsburgh International Race Complex is the ideal venue for racing the big thunderous Mustangs, Corvettes and Jaguars – cars that need a big track to test the mettle of these ground pounders. Also racing were open wheel competition with Formula Fords and Formula Juniors. The best of Europe was represented by BMW, Porsche, Jaguar, Lotus and Alfa Romeo.
The Pittsburgh International Race Complex is a purpose-built track, 40 miles northwest of Pittsburgh. It has recently come under new ownership and has been renamed from BeaveRun. Plans are underway to add the South Track extension in late 2014, stretching the track from 1.6 miles to a full size 3.4 miles. Many other improvements have already been made.
PIRC's North Track is ideally suited to high performance driver training, racing of all types, vehicle demonstrations and testing. The track is 1.5 miles in length and has 12 turns. With a layout that flows over hilly natural terrain, the course offers exciting elevation changes and several blind-entry turns that challenge the abilities of drivers and riders alike.
The Elegance at Hershey
The fourth annual presentation of The Elegance of Hershey was held in the beautiful backdrop of the Hotel Hershey in Hershey, PA. The large English garden, which includes fountain-laden ponds, well-manicured lawns, flowers, and beautiful porticos, certainly enhanced the ambiance and elegance of the automobiles.
More than sixty rare collectible vehicles from many eras were on display while talented and educated judges reviewed the participants' cars. Visitors to the event were invited to select their favorite vehicle in attendance - their 'People's Choice' award. The most elegant vehicle at the event, as chosen by 'the people', was the 1954 DeSoto Adventurer II Concept owned by Paul Gould. The vehicle was a design exercise that was built by Ghia for Chrysler. It was given features of a European GT coupe with power from an American-built engine. The design was courtesy of Ghia engineer/designer Giovanni Savonuzzi under the guise of Chrysler's head of styling, Virgil Exner. It made its debut at the Turin Auto Show and in late-1956 it was the centerpiece of the Brussels Auto Show in Belgium.
The judges selection of most elegant vehicle, and awarded with Best of Show honors (The Governor's Cup), went to the 1935 Duesenberg SJ Speedster, also known as the Mormon Meteor, owned by Harry Yeaggy. It was also the recipient of the 'Most Elegant American Open Pre-War' award. The car, which won Best of Show honors at the 2007 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, is a masterpiece in all respects, from performance to design. It proudly carries the name of Ab Jenkins on its side, right in front of the driver's cockpit. Jenkins drove this Duesenberg Special to a number of land speed records at the Bonneville Salt Flats proving to all that its supercharged 420 cubic-inch eight-cylinder engine which produced an astonishing 400 horsepower was among the fastest automobiles on the planet.
Cars & Coffee at the Concours
Over 250 classic and exotic cars from local car clubs were on displayed on the 10th and 18th fairways of the Golf Club of Amelia Island to participate in the
Cars & Coffee at the Concours presented by Heacock Classic Car Insurance.
Vehicles were pre-registered to participate and admission was free.
This was the second year for this event and in that short amount of time has grown into a very popular and well attended event. A large selection of Chevy Corvettes, Dodge Vipers, BMWs, Jaguars and Porsches were on display.
Festivals of Speed Amelia Island
Festivals of Speed Motorsports Display was held at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation resort in Amelia Island, Florida. The activities began with a Luxury Lifestyle Cocktail Reception featuring smooth jazz, open bar, themed food display, and a live and silent auction benefitting Communities in Schools of Nassau County. The Luxury Lifestyle display featured fashion displays, fine jewelry, unique timepieces, collectable artwork, exotic travel destinations and much more.
The venue for the automobile portion was held on the 9th fairway of the Oak Marsh golf course. The well-manicured lawn overlooking the marsh provided the perfect platform to showcase the vintage and modern masterpieces. There were hundreds of exotic automobiles, custom motorcycles, and luxury lifestyle companies for enthusiasts to admire and enjoy.
Vehicles on display included Bugatti, Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Porsche, Mercedes Benz, Fisker, Ducati and many others. This year, the event celebrated the 50th anniversary of Lamborghini and the 100 year anniversary of Aston Martin.
Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance
The 19th annual Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance was held at the Ritz Carlton and the Golf Club of Amelia Island at Summer Beach, Florida. It is regarded as one of the premiere automotive events in the world and one of the most innovative shows due to its eclectic classes of unique vintage cars. The event showcases cars from private collections across the United States and the world. More than 29,000 automotive enthusiasts were in attendance to view over 330 cars and rare motorcycles, including some of the cars from this year's honoree, Jochen Mass. Mass is one of just 15 drivers to win the 24 Hours of LeMans and a Formula 1 race.
Along with the cars of Jochen Mass, other featured categories at this year's event included Beach Cars, Underslung, BMW CSL, Chrysler Concepts, Packard Concepts of Ralph Marano, Offenhauser Power, 50th Anniversary of McLaren, Cars of Zagato Design, and Porsche 904/962.
Highlights on the field included the presence of BMW's rare 'Batmobiles' racing coupes, which included Alexander Calder's famed 1975 Le Mans 3.0 CSL, 1975 Sebring 12 Hour and 1976 Daytona 24 Hour winners. The rarely seen Maserati 450S Le Mans 'Costin Coupe,' which Sir Stirling Moss raced at Le Mans in 1957 also graced the field, while Chrysler's La Comtesse Concept Car was introduced to the public after an extensive restoration by the Chrysler group. In addition, attendees were entertained by the exceptional Packard concept car collection of Ralph and Adeline Marano, rare beach cars, and Zagato-bodied masterpieces.

Representing classic European Sports and GT cars, the fastest-growing segment in today's market, we are thrilled to announce the world-record-setting sale of one of Lamborghini's very first road cars, the 350 GT, at $742,630 including commission. One of 120 mostly hand-built cars and boasting Giotto Bizzarrini's 35-liter DOHC V-12 engine, a race-bred chassis designed by Gian Paolo Dallara, and Touring's famous Superleggera bodywork penned by Franco Scaglione, 350 GT Chassis 211 was comprehensively restored to original standards with no detail overlooked, including an engine rebuild at Bob Wallace Cars, the shop of the late former Lamborghini chief test driver Bob Wallace.
Another new world record was set with the highly anticipated sale of a legendary 1963 Pontiac Tempest Le Mans Super Duty drag racing car, 1 of 2 known examples remaining today of the original 6 Coupes built by Pontiac to contest the NHRA's wild A/Factory Experimental (A/FX) class. Raced by Detroit's Stan Long Pontiac and tweaked with a heavy-duty driveline to handle the 421 engine's massive power and torque, the car remains famous as 'The World's Fastest Tempest' after driver Stan Antlocer blasted to a brutal 11.93-second ET at 123.95 mph at Martin, Michigan's US 131 Dragway. After sending the Chevy, Ford, and Mopar contingents back to their respective trailers in 1963, the Tempest fell out of sight and in 2008, it was saved from the crusher and then expertly restored to its former glory by Scott Tiemann's Super Car Specialties. When the frenzied bidding finally ended, the Tempest garnered a world record-setting $335,630 including commission.
Barrett-Jackson's 43RD Annual Scottsdale Auction
Barrett-Jackson, The World's Greatest Collector Car Auctions™, announced today the strongest sales results in the 43 year history of the Scottsdale car auction. Over the course of six days, nearly 1,400 vehicles were sold at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale event totaling more than $113 million in sales. Barrett-Jackson's auction week attracted numerous celebrities, top car aficionados and collectors alike with some of the world's most valuable collectible and coveted vehicles. Among other notable celebrities, Sir Stirling Moss made an appearance and rode across the block in the third highest selling car, the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Coupe.
'This was a huge year for Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale. We kicked it off with a great opening night gala, christening the new Westworld facility. The Scottsdale auction had the highest sales in the history of our company – exceeding $113 million,' said Craig Jackson, Chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. 'We sold some great cars for charity, attendance exceeded 300,000 and the celebrity turnout was great. Scottsdale 2014 witnessed an increase in the value of Americana cars as well as the general strengthening of the value of the cars we sold. Eleven new world auction records were established with six cars sold above the $2 million mark and 13 cars sold above the $1 million dollar mark during the well attended two-day auction at Scottsdale Fashion Square.
