Duesenbergs have claimed Best of Show honors at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance on six occasions, more victories than any other American marque, with 2013 being the last occasion that an American automobile won the coveted trophy (a 1934 Packard Twelve). Competitors from 18 countries and 33 states brought classic cars to the event, with top honors bestowed upon a 1932 Duesenberg J Figoni Sports Torpedo owned by Lee R. Anderson Sr., bringing the count to '7' for Duesenberg.

'This rare Duesenberg marries American might with European style,' said Concours Chairman Sandra Button. 'It did well in some early rallies and concours. Then, its history took a turn, with chassis separated from body. The story of its resurrection is one of pure passion.'

'My goodness, we're overwhelmed,' Penny Anderson exclaimed. 'We just can't believe we won Best of Show! We've met so many people through the years, enjoyed all the people that participate. It's just a joy and an honor to be here.'

'We've been doing this for years, and we've come close in the past,' said Lee, 'but we've never won actually, so Penny is right, it's overwhelming. All the preparation—the story behind this car is just amazing. There's only one Figoni Duesenberg, ever ever, and it's this one right here. So, it's like all these things coming together to make a real champion. We're so excited.'



This year's event celebrated two significant centennials - that of Lincoln and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The first 24 Hours of Le Mans took place in May of 1923 and the Pebble Beach Concours celebrated with a selection of important machines that have competed at the storied event. Additional featured automotive classes included 1932 Ford Historic Hot Rods, Talbot-Lago T26 Grand Sport, Otto Vu, Alfa 8C 2300, Graber Coachwork and McFarlan, as well as classes for Ferrari, Duesenberg, Packard and Rolls-Royce.



Lincoln automobiles on display ranged from a 1922 Model L that marked its own 100th birthday, to the earliest surviving prototpye for the prewar Lincoln Continentnal. The 1941 Lincoln Continental was on this year's poster. Begun in 1917, Lincoln Motor Company initially built the Liberty engines that powered the aircraft of World War I. After the war, a transition to automaking led to financial downturn, but Ford Motor Company came to its rescue in 1922, purchasing the company and quickly reversing its fortunes. With Edsel Ford's guidance, Loon quickly became the arbiter of elegance in America, offering custom bodies on Models L and then K, followed by the Zephyr and Continental, among other models.



Swiss Carrosserie Hermann Graber was active from 1925 to 1970 and the impeccably tasteful styling of their convertibles and coupés was a delicate blend of styling details sourced from many different countries. The 1930 Duesenberg J Graber Cabriolet owned by Sam and Emily Mann was selected as Best in Class in the Graber Coachwork Early category. What is currently a Graber-bodied convertible coupe began life as a Murphy-bodied Town Car built for Vera Montgomery of New York City, NY. The car was later sold to Vladimir de Radevsky of Paris, who (in 1935) tasked the coachbuilder Graber with re-bodying the car. A 1953 Bentley Mark VI Graber Drophead Coupe owned by John Miller was selected as Best in Class in the Graber Coachwork Late category. The two-door fixed-head bodywork by Graber was displayed in that configuration at the 1952 Geneva Auto Show. Following the show, the car was returned to Graber and reconfigured as a Drophead Coupe.



McFarlan's were first offered in 1910 and contested the first and second Indianapolis 500, quickly catapulted into the lixury market, often regarded as the American Rolls-Royce for their massive size and quality. Their list of clientele includes Roscoe Conkling 'Fatty' Arbuckle, Jack Dempsey, and Al Capone. The company's existence ended in 1928 and fewer than two dozen examples exist in modern times. A 1923 McFarlan 154 Twin Valve Six owned by the Nethercutt Collection won top honors in its class. It is a very special vehicle that has a rear roof that is collapsible and is known as the 'Knicker-Bocker Cabriolet.' One of fifty built in 1923, the car was originally purchased by a movie studio and was used by film star Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle. With its six fenders, ornamental side lamps, and landau bars, the Knickerbocker body style was more than a bit flamboyant. Special equipment for Arbuckle included a canopy that snapped onto the back of the roof - and a director's chair with his name on it.



Fiat produced a 2-liter V-8 from 1952 to 1954 known as the Otto Vu (V-8 in Italian), used by Fiat and a few Siatas. Combined with a race-worthy sport chassis, many examples were clothed by the world's finest coachbuilders, including Italian carrozzeria from Ghia and Pininfarina to Vignale and Zagato. Among a diverse field of open and closed bodied examples in unique configurations, a 1953 Siata 208CS Balbo Coupe owned by Larry & Jane Solomon was selected as Best in Class, ahead of the 2nd in Class 1954 Fiat 8V Zagato Coupe owned by the The Cultivated Collector and the Scott & Jamie Cielewich's 1953 Siata 208S Motto Spider.

Siata (Societa Italiana Applicazioni Trasformazioni Automobilistiche) specialized in aftermarket products for Fiats, the company used its knowledge and expertise to launch the first Siata-badged, Fiat-based car in 1948. Around sixty chassis were built by Siata in 1953 and 1954, and they received at least half a dozen body type variations, the most common being the 208S.



The Pebble Beach Concours celebrated the 90th Anniversary of the iconic 1932 Ford roadster with a selection of famed dry lakes racers, magazine feature cars, showboats and street rods. The Hot Rod was the diffinitive automotive expression of American ingenuity, and the 1932 Ford was the choice for generations of hot rodders. Light, stylish and fast, the first Ford production car with a V-8 engine, the 'Deuce' as it's popularly known, is the quintessential hot rod. Bruce Meyer's 1932 Ford Bob McGee Roadster was selected as the favorite in the 1932 Ford Historic Hot Rods class. Featured on the October 1948 cover of Hot Rod Magazine in a memorable photo by Bob Petersen, Bob McGee's classic roadster set the tone for countrywide copies. At first glance, this bright red car seems straightforward, but it's loaded with clever features like '40 Studebaker hidden hinges, a full-length decklid by California Metal Shaping, a three-piece hood and aluminum dash built by Whitey Clayton and reminiscent of Ford-Miller Indy race cars, a V-ed front spreader bar, headlight stands fabricated from the original light bar, and circular Pontiac taillights. This red rocket set the pattern for a legion of cars to come.


The Pebble Beach Concours raised more than $2.67 million for charity this year, bringing the event's total charitable donations to over $35 million to date. Through the Pebble Beach Company Foundation, the primary charitable partner of the Concours, these funds will benefit more than 95 local charities, impacting the lives of more than 10,000 children annually in Monterey County.


Gooding & Company, the official auction house of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, concluded its 18th annual Pebble Beach Auctions this weekend, realizing over $105 million in sales. Several star cars set new world records, including the 1990 Ferrari F40, which sold for $3,965,000, and the 1994 Bugatti EB110 Super Sport, which achieved $3,167,500. The top sale of the weekend was a stunningly elegant 1937 Bugatti Type 57SC Atalante, which achieved a final sale price of $10,345,000.


The 72nd Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance will take place on Sunday, August 20, 2023, and will celebrate famed coachbuilder Joseph Figoni and Pegaso.
