GM stylist Harley Earl is credited with this styling craze first appearing on the 1948 Cadillac and inspired by P-38 lightning aircraft. Taken to the extremes by Virgil Exner, Dave Holls and other greats, this stylistic element lost favor with the buying public in the mid-1960's. These vehicles best exemplify this time of stylistic excess.
