A union between Daimler and Benz in 1926 was soon followed by their first model, the 630 K (K for 'Kurtz' meaning short). The Mercedes-Benz 630 was known as the 24/100/140. The 24 referred to the engine's displacement-based taxable horsepower. 100 was the brake horsepower produced during normal operation. The 140 is the rating with the supercharger engaged. The massive engine was equipped with a dual ignition system that was mated to a four-speed manual gearbox.
This example, with chassis number 32019, has a short-chassis and a convertible body style. Under the bonnet is the Type 630 engine with number 60434. It was consigned to British Mercedes-Benz, Ltd. on April 13th of 1927. Thomas Harrington Ltd. was commissioned to built the four-seater drophead body.
The original owner of the car is not known but believed to have later been owned by several prominent UK collectors. It was exported to Thailand later in its life, where it was reportedly confiscated by Customs and would remain in storage for a lengthy period. A prominent Thai family used government connections in the late 1980s to acquire the car. It would remain in their care for nearly two decades.
The car was imported into the United States in the late 2000s. It has been given a full-service overhaul by the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center.
In 2010, this car was offered for sale at the Exceptional Motorcars and Automobilia auction presented by Bonhams. Unfortunately, the car would leave the auction unsold, as a buyer willing to satisfy its reserve was not found. The car had been estimated to sell for $450,000 - $550,000.By Daniel Vaughan | Feb 2014
