This 1929 DuPont, Model G, Waterhouse Convertible Coupe is one of 273 Model G luxury automobiles produced between 1929 and January 1932, when the marque ended all production. A total of 537 automobiles were produced by DuPont Motors. 18 examples were built with the Waterhouse convertible coupe coachwork.
DuPont Motors Inc. was founded by E. Paul duPont to build marine engines during World War I. When the war ended, he began to manufacture automobiles, and his first car, the Model A, was introduced in 1919.
This 1929 Model G was the marque's first eight-cylinder car. It was available as a phaeton, coupe, sedan, victoria, limousine, sport, and this example - a convertible. All had custom-made bodies by coachbuilders such as Merrimac, Derham, and this example of a Waterhouse body.
The vehicle has a top speed of 77 mph and is powered by an in-line, 321.8 cubic-inch, 8-cylinder engine, developing 125 hp, and is coupled to a 3-speed manual transmission. The 1929 automobile sold new for between $4,360 and $6,125.
Famous owners of Model Gs include Will Rogers, Jack Dempsey, and Mary Pickford, who bought it for her husband, Douglas Fairbanks.
This DuPont Model G was originally purchased by famed jazz musician Nick Lucas, who was a renowned DuPont fan, owning at least two other Model Gs in his lifetime. The car became a part of Tom DuPont's collection in the mid-1990s and underwent a full restoration.
