German coachbuilder Karmann and Italian styling house Ghia had independently proposed ideas for a Beetle variant, but neither were able to convince Volkswagen management until the Osnabruck firm approached the Turin-based carrozerria about a collaborative effort.
The result of their work was a prototype that was shown to Volkswagen chairman Heinz Nordhoff on November 16th of 1953. The design was well received and quickly met with approval. The design was similar to the Chrysler D'Elegance created by Virgil Exner that Ghia was building at the time. The Karmann-Ghia had a pillarless window treatment and a low beltline that ascended into the rear haunches. Body manufacturing and final assembly was handled at Karmann, which was already receiving a steady supply of chassis for Beetle Cabriolets.
The car was produced until 1974.
This example has been given a restoration and is believed to be a California car for much of its early life. It was acquired in the mid-2000s by Hoosier Hot Rods of Syracuse, Indiana and was treated to a its restoration in 2007. It has accrued less than 250 miles since that time. It has color-matched two-spoke steering wheel, wood grain dash panel, Bendix Sapphire XI push-button AM radio, vinyl upholstery, and light blue paint.
Powering this Volkswagen Karmann-Ghia Cabriolet is a 1585cc flat four-cylinder engine with a single Solex carburetor. The 60 horsepower it produces is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual gearbox.
In 2012, this car was offered for sale at the Amelia Island sale presented by Gooding & Company. It was estimated to sell for $25,000 - $35,000 and offered without reserve. As bidding came to a close, the car had been sold for $25,300 inclusive of buyer's premium.By Daniel Vaughan | Apr 2012
