1928 Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Spider

  • Designed by Zagato
  • Chassis Number: 0211462
In 1927 Alfa Romeo's engineer, Vittorio Jano, created the 6C 1500 engine that set new standards for lightweight, high-performance motorcars. The chassis was low and lightweight, featuring semi-elliptic springs. Many carrozzeria produced coachwork for this chassis, but most of all it was Zagato whose Spiders came to epitomize the sporting 6C series.

The 6C 1500 was first unveiled at the Milan Show in April of 1925 and was later shown in London and Paris. It was received with enthusiasm at every venue.

This Alfa is one of only four 6C 1500s known to survive and is the oldest of them all. It has been carefully preserved over the years and its body panels still carry their original Zagato job numbers. In 1976 it was restored by Hill and Vaughn, and Phil Hill drove this car on several tours and rallies. This 1928 Zagato Spider bodied 6C 1500 Alfa Romeo was driven by racecar driver Phil Hill in the 1978 Monterey Historic Races. It has won many awards including First in Class at Pebble Beach in 1978.

The car is powered by a water-cooled, double-overhead-cam, 6-cylinder, 1487 cc, 76 horsepower engine coupled to a 4-speed manual transmission. The chassis is channel-steel; front and rear suspension by semi-elliptic leaf spring and 4-wheel drum brakes. It weighs only 1,859 pounds and has a top speed of 78 mph.
