1953 Hotchkiss Gregoire Coupe

Hotchkiss was a French company that produced cars from 1903 to 1955. Their badge includes two crossed cannons which referred to the company's history as an arms manufacturer. Production ceased during World War II and the late 1940s models were essentially pre-war designs.

The Gregoire was introduced in 1950 and was named for its designer, Jean-Albert Gregoire. He was a pioneer of front-wheel drive and was involved in producing cars using front wheel drive as early as the late 1920s. He also worked on the use of aluminum in cars. The Hotchkiss Gregoire featured front-wheel drive as well as a cast aluminum frame and firewall. In spite of being technologically advanced, sales were low; only 247 samples were produced between 1950 and 1953, and only 40 in 1953.

Power is from a 2180cc four-cylinder boxer engine capable of producing 70 horsepower. This combined with the car's lightweight all-aluminum construction and stream-lined design helped it secure a victory in the Monte Carlo Rally.

The company introduced a coachbuilt coupe and cabriolet at the 1952 Paris Salon de l'Automobile, and a Chapron-bodied streamlined coupe with a panoramic rear window at the 1953 Salon.

This vehicle is the first of only seven two-door models built. It wears a custom body style by Henri Chapron, a famous French automobile coachbuilder. The car was presented at the New York Auto Show in 1953 and was purchased by Ed Cole, who was President of the Chevrolet Motor Division at the time. Mr. Cole was in charge of launching the Corvette. The car was restored by its current owner in 2010 with the help of Noelle Chapron-Paul, the daughter of Henri Chapron.
