Original owner Dan Furey of Ohio purchased a brand new Boss 302 Mustang off the Loudon Ford showroom floor in Hanoverton, Ohio in December 1969. He immediately stripped and rebuilt the car to SCCA Trans-Am specifications and raced the car in the 1970 SCCA Trans-Am series at tracks such as Lime Rock, Mid-Ohio, Watkins Glen and Road America. In 1971, the car was raced locally in the SCCA 'A' Sedan series and in 1972 was returned to the SCCA Trans-Am series. From 1973 to 1978, the car raced extensively in SCCA Trans-Am and IMSA events.
Dan Furey was an independent competitor on a modest budget, competing with factory teams and drivers. The most notable aspect of the car's history occurred on June 7th of 1970, in the SCCA Trans-Am event Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. It was involved in a racing incident causing moderate front-end damage to Parnelli Jones' #15 Boss 302 Mustang. Parnelli held a sixteen-second lead at the time and lost it all as a result of the collision. He eventually won a hard-fought race with George Folmer in another Boss 302 Mustang. '#61' suffered damage to the driver's door. This was the only damage suffered in its entire racing career.
In 2001, the car was comprehensively restored by Michael Eisenberg's MAECO Motorsports in Northridge, CA. It began vintage racing with the West Coast Trans-Am racers group in May of 2002 and has completed at many events since, including: Monterey Historics, Wine Country Classics, Chrysler Classic Speed Festival, and Lime Rock Vintage Festival.
Prior owners and/or drivers include: Dan Furey, John Higgins, Jack Beeson, Vic Brown, Neil Karolek, Bryan Mimaki, Gary Underwood, Terry Underwood, and Terry Miller. The current owner purchased the car from Terry Miller in November of 2003 and has raced in vintage Trans-Am races ever since.
