When Ford introduced the Mustang on April 17, 1964, it took the world by storm, Creating a new market segment that would affectionately become known as 'Pony Cars.' With projected sales pegged at about 100,000 units, the Mustang surpassed that mark within three months; within 18 months, more than 1 million were produced.
This Raven Black Mustang is special for many reasons. First, it si one of approximately 180 Mustangs assembled prior to the official production start date. Built specifically for Henry Ford II, it has a variety of features unique to this car.
Purchased by the current owner in 1974 after reading a Detroit News classified ad claiming Ford family ownership, he knew it was something special. He found a tired 289 Hi-Po hardtop with some unusual features. Among them were several that were not offered until 1966. He also found an original owner's manual in the glove box, with the name Edsel B. Ford II and a Grosse Pointe address.
Embarking on a complete restoration in 2001, it would be five years before completion. Additional unique features include leaded body seams, an alternator charging system, a padded leather roof, chromed die-cast interior and trim pieces and a very special experimental 289 cubic-inch high-performance K-code engine. It also features a beautiful one-off leather interior, designed specifically for Mr. Ford.
