With the launch of the Phantom V, Rolls-Royce offered its clients a long wheelbase vehicle of the highest class, reserved not only for dignitaries, royalty and heads of state, but also for those successful in business and finance who were looking for an exceptional car providing convenience, incredible comfort and plenty of room.
The Phantom name was revived by Rolls-Royce in 1959 with the introduction of the Phantom V. It was the first time that Phantoms were offered for sale to the public in 20 years. The Phantom V was based on the Silver Cloud II, sharing its V8 engine and four-speed Hydramatic gearbox. The chassis was lengthened and strengthened considerably and the final drive permitted unfussy progress at a speed only slightly above walking pace, which was much appreciated for use during ceremonial occasions.
Although the first orders were placed by the Royal Court and dignitaries, the bulk of inquiries originated in industry or from private individuals. The first owner of this unusual James Young-bodied touring limousine was Albert Silvera, a Haitian diplomat and well-known car collector. His wife Gladys was involved in specifying the colors of her husband's unique cars, even sketching some of the bodywork changes he wanted to they could be carried out. Other than owning a great car collection, Silvera owned the exotic El Rancho Hotel near Port-au-Prince in Haiti as well as homes in South Florida and Paris.
