Like the Cobra, the Shelby G.T. 350 was a dominant force on the track right from the start. In its first race, which happened near Carroll Shelby's birthplace in Texas, Ken Miles drove a Shelby G.T. 350 'R model' to first in class. From that moment, the Shelby ruled the competition.
The race version of the Shelby G.T. 350, won five of the SCCA six divisions in 1965 with drivers like Jerry Titus, Bob Johnson and Mark Donohue behind the wheel. Titus also took the national championship. Shelby GT350's won the B-Production title again in 1966 and 1967.
According to Carroll Shelby, 'it was fun to blow off a Porsche with a $3900 donkey (the 1965 Shelby G.T.350 Mustang).'
SFM5R535 was ordered by Shelby American on March 18, 1965, to be built as a factory competition car. Ordered by Benito Lores when he visited Shelby American, it was shipped to Miami, FL via TWA air where it was picked up by Frederico Block who arranged for the shipment to Peru. Purchased by Benito Lores (Lima, Peru) with Weber carburetors fitted at the factory the total price was $6,545.
