1956 Don Miller Crosley S H-Mod

  • Chassis Number: 005
The Miller Crosley No. 172HM was completed in February 1956 at Don Miller's shop at the rear of his Inglewood, California, home. As originally produced, Don had used a Triumph Bonneville engine he had garnered from Richie Siefried. Don raced this car at Palm Springs in 1956, blowing a piston on Saturday. After much overnight heroics in the fab department, Don had it on the grid Sunday. Starting last in a field of 24 G and H cars, he worked up to finish on 'Doc Youngs' bumper or 2nd in class and 5th overall. The Triumph had vibrated so badly in this tiny chassis that Don began to have second thoughts. The next outing confirmed his opinion when at Paramount Ranch, despite finishing 3rd, the car shook terribly. By the next race, Don had converted the car to Crosley power. Don, using a Crosley engine, came in 2nd at Pomona later that year, but by Labor Day at Santa Barbara, the little car had been sold to Jack Brown who would race it through 1961 with marginal results. Jock Puckett had driven against this car with the MPX Crosley in 1960 and 1961. Like Joe, Jack Brown lived in Manhattan Beach. In 1987, five years after Jack Brown had passed away, Joe acquired the car, and the team began a 3.5-year restoration which ended on July 19, 1991.
