1937 Railton Fairmile II Drophead Coupe

The Railton is an early example of an Anglo-American hybrid - built in England with American powertrain components. Hudson, well-established in Europe, supplied the chassis as well as the motivation; first with Essex and later Terraplane engines.

The Railton was named for land speed record holder Reid Railton, the car being a collaboration with Noel Macklin, who produced the Invicta. Railton's actual input was small, but he received a royalty on every car built. The marque was built at the Fairmile Engineering Company in Cobham, Surrey, England, which gives the car its name. Production began in 1933 and continued until the onset of World War II, with fewer than 1,500 being produced.

Railton was the first of the Anglo-American sports cars producing almost 1,500 cars from 1933 through 1939. Railton imported U.S.-built chassis with running gear to Britain and then used at least five coach builders to build car bodies. Most of the cars were produced by three coach builders with Coachcraft, the builder of this car, producing the largest volume. Coachcraft made a little over 500 Railton bodies in about twenty different body styles. Of the bodies built by Coachcraft, 178 were Fairmile drophead coupes like this car with about 35 known to have survived today. The Fairmile drophead coupe is considered to epitomize the Railton ideal of a comfortable all-weather fast touring car.

This Railton is powered by a 121 horsepower straight eight and is one of 135 of its type produced, of with about 35 survive. A special lightweight model was credited with a 0-60 mph time of 8.8 seconds, laying claim to the fastest production automobile in 1935. The restoration of this car was completed in 2016.
