1973 Mohs Safarikar Sedan

  • Chassis Number: VIN#: 312101H942198
  • Body Number: Chassis#: 730203
This unusual vehicle is one of three prototypes built by Mohs Seaplane of Madison, Wisconsin, owned by Mr. Bruce Baldwin Mohs. Only two examples survive.

Built specifically as an African Safari vehicle, it never saw duty there. The chassis builder was 'International' (1969 International Travelall) and power is supplied by a 392 cubic-inhV8 engine. Unusual features include an aluminum body that is covered with 40 yards of Naugahyde vinyl stretched and stapled over polyurethane foam padding. This is a dual cowl dual windshield hardtop metal convertible. The top is removable and coupled with the sliding doors which gave hunters protection while taking African game.

It is equipped with three Steve McQueen 'Baja' racing seats that swivel for comfort while driving on rough terrain. The back bench seating folds down and can sleep two adults and two children. The interior is covered with 14 yards of black/red tuxedo carpet. There are 2,700 aluminum rivets, 40 large cans of 3M spray adhesive to attach foam to the body, 7,000 stainless steel staples, 196 feet of 1/2-inch thick x 1-inch wide wood stripes, and 48,000 hours of restoration. It was advertised as having nitrogen-filled tires long before that practice became commonplace. This vehicle is equipped with the optional two-way radio for keeping in touch with the base camp while on safari.

It took 4,800 hours during four years of restoration.
