The National Motor Vehicle Company evolved from the Indianapolis Chain and Stamping company. Manufacturers of the 'Diamond' brand, they were the largest manufacturer of bicycle and automatic roller chains in the United States founded by Charles E. Test, who died in 1910, along with Arthur C. Newby and others, they built cars from 1900 to 1924, originally powered by electric motors. Electricity was phased out as a power source in 1906. Newby was one of the four founders of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway where National won the 500-mile race in 1912 with an average speed of 78.2 mph. National still holds the record for the largest engine ever to win the Indy 500. That four-cylinder engine displaced 490 cubic inches.
This car is owned and driven by Charles D. Test, the great-grandson of the Founder and president of the National Car Company - Charles E. Test. This 1911 National is an accurate example of the privately entered 'stock cars' of the early days of racing. Essentially stripped-down production cars, Nationals were at a big advantage in racing due to their reliability, and powerful large engines. They also benefitted from extensive testing at their home track - the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The 'Speedway Roadsters' were a limited edition car celebrating their recent success at Indy and elsewhere by replicating the factory team cars as much as allowed. Powered by a 450 cubic-inch four-cylinder engine, they were the car to beat.
