The Springfield 40/50 became more American in makeup under the design leadership of Maurice Olley. Typically, U.S.-built cars lagged behind their English counterparts due to the need for American drawings to be checked and approved, often only after mechanical tests at Derby. Once approval was granted, tools had to be made further causing delays by many months. The first 1,000 Springfield-built 40/50's were produced with right-hand drive - left-hand drive became available in 1925 as six-volt electrics had one year earlier. Other advances included a twin-coil ignition with dual distributors and a new three-speed gearbox with center shift better suited to American customers who shifted gears as infrequently as possible.
This 'Pall Mall' Sports Tourer was delivered new to Mr. J. R. Thompson, Sr. of Chicago, IL on May 12, 1925, and stayed with him for a number of years. In the mid-1970s this Ghost, still carrying its original body # M 1111, was purchased by Mr. William Pettit and restored to show winning standards.
This Silver Ghost is powered by a 7.4-liter water-cooled side-valve, 6-cylinder engine developing 85 horsepower. This 1925 model was the first year for left-hand drive Ghosts and 3-speed manual transmission.
