During the classic era, few manufacturers could match the elegance and innovation of the companies of E.L. Cord's fast-growing empire. His cornerstone enterprise was Auburn, which Cord famously transformed into a manufacturer of stylish performing cars at a reasonable price point.
Auburn built various Speedster models through the years. They were also the only maker to produce speedster-style bodies in significant quantities. Designed by Alan Leamy, they spanned the years from 1928 through 1936 with no models built in 1930 or 1934. Auburn produced only 75 Speedster models for the model year in 1932.
The 8-100A (referred to as a 'Baby Duesenberg') was named for its 268-cubic inch, inline eight-cylinder engine that generated 100 horsepower. The A designated a custom-built model. A three-speed transmission was mated to a Columbia 'Dual Ratio' rear axle. This provided one set of gearing for city driving and a second gearing range for highway driving.
The Model 8-100A was equipped with a two-speed rear axle, automatic starting (known as 'Startix'), shocks that were adjustable from the driver's seat, automatic chassis lubrication, a cigar lighter, and six chrome wire wheels. The bodies were produced by the Union City Body Company.
This car was originally built with sedan coachwork and was designated serial number 9288A. The current body for this car was created by the Union City Body Company. Union City was also known for the bodies they built for buses and delivery vans. Among their primary customers was the United Parcel Company.
Of special note for this car is the originality of the body, unlike many that exist today wearing later reproduction bodies. During the car's extensive five-year restoration, the serial number was changed to 9288E to denote the change to a Speedster body. Much of the original equipment remains on the car and it has been returned to original factory specifications including the use of most of its original woodwork.
84 Speedsters were produced in 1932.
