1938 Phantom Corsair Coupe

This very unusual six-passenger coupe was a joint effort of Heinz and Maurice Schwartz of the custom body firm of Bohman & Schwartz in Pasadena, CA. Rust Heinz, an heir to the Heinz 57 ketchup fortune, was a young designer who had the means to put into reality his car of tomorrow, better known as the Phantom Corsair. Based on a 1936 Cord Westchester Sedan with a Granatelli modified 192 horsepower supercharged Cord motor, the body was constructed by Maurice Schwartz of Bohman & Schwartz Body Company. Designed in a wind tunnel, the radical fastback body incorporates modern items such as a climate control system and crash-padded dash. It starred in the 1938 movie The Young at Heart where it was called the 'Flying Wombat.' Originally intended to be produced in limited numbers for an estimated $12,500, the project ended with Heinz's untimely death in 1939. The car cost $24,000 to build and featured aerodynamic engineering, front-wheel drive, an electric gear shift, four forward speeds, and a Cord V8 Lycoming engine, which was modified by Andy Granatelli. The approximate top speed was 115 mph. The car's lower frame was made of chrome molybdenum steel and the upper frame was constructed of electrically welded aviation steel tubing. The alloy steel and aluminum body had no running boards, fenders, or door handles. The doors open with the touch of buttons located outside and on the instrument panel. The interior is padded throughout with cork and rubber for safety, soundproofing, and insulation. Four persons sat across the front seat and two in the back, facing the rear.
