1970 Shadow MKI Spyder

  • Chassis Number: 70-4
This 1970 Shadow MKI was one of the most radical designs raced in the CanAm Series. It was designed by Trevor Harris for Don Nichols Shadow Team in 1969, the car featured very small diameter tires developed by Firestone to minimize frontal area. the complications of integrating suspension, brakes, engine, and drivetrain compartments, (and even the driver) in such a small package led to novel designs that were difficult to develop and many were proven to be flawed. Tested extensively by George Follmer in late 1969, the car first appeared at Mosport in 1970, qualified 6th, and DNF due to overheating (the radiators were located inside the wing!). Revised to comply with SCCA, the car appeared at St. Jovite with tiny radiators above the wing, qualifying 10th, but DNF to overheating. The final version was with a large wing, radiators mounted below, and painted black, the car last raced at Mid Ohio, with Vic Elford driving, qualified 7th, but retired due to wheel vibration. The car never raced again, and the team began work on a more conventional car for the 1971 season.
