1984 Porsche 935 Fabcar Coupe

  • Chassis Number: 935/84
In 1983, Bob Akin commissioned Dave Klym of Fabcar in Tucker, GA, to build 'the last 935.' Concentration was on building a reliable car and getting the car's weight down to the IMSA weight limit of 2,060 pounds. The chassis is made of steel tubing, using standard K3 suspension in the rear and the 935 'Moby Dick' set-up in the front. The car uses the standard 3.2-liter twin-turbo engine used in the K3, with minor modifications. The body is an adaptation of the original Kremer K4 nose with the rest being Fabcar's own design. The original body was created in aluminum, but was replaced with fiberglass once the design had been perfected. This example was constructed from the wreckage of Derek Bell's 935L1, using careful reallocation of components, saving 100 pounds of Aeroquip lines alone. This car was ready for racing after only 20 laps of testing at Road Atlanta, and placed third in its first race, the Three Hour Finale at Daytona in 1983. Akin retired this car when he received his 952, but the car continued to race in Ralph Lauren Livery until 1986.
