On the one hand, the Type 35 Bugatti is said to have won over 1950 major European races during the production run from 1924 to mid-1930. On the other hand, the series totaled over three hundred thirty cars, which were sold to first-tier drivers, including Costantini, Dubonnet, Goux, Junek, Chiron, Dreyfus and Nice, and many lesser racing drivers, as well as scores of non-racing of privilege, with a taste for beautifully engineered machinery.
This car, Type 35C. No. 4833 was sold off the Paris showroom floor in May of 1927. Its present owner acquired it from Nigel and Pam Arnold-Forster of Swindon, UK, in 1986. It is believed to have come previously from Uwe Hucke, Nettlestadt, Germany, and prior to that, from the collection of Andres Binda, Nice, France.
The car's complex roller crank showed signs of cage wear and was replaced in kind in 1990 by its present owner. It has also been fitted with a correct Bosch electric starter, which obviates hand cranking --- a welcome change on cold mornings.
Short of full provenance but brimming with patina, it has been raced by its present owner at Monterey and other U.S. locations since early 1987.
