When Bud Moore Racing left NASCAR racing in 1999, he had amassed 63 wins. The late 1960s were a memorable period with the yellow Ford Mustang Boss 302s with drivers such as George Follmer, Peter Green, and Parnelli Jones. The team won three races in 1969 and dominated the 1970 season with six victories out of 11 races. Parnelli Jones won that year's Drivers Championship. Moore continued to race during the 1971 season even though Ford had withdrawn their support. The Bud Moore Racing team finished the season in second place behind the factory-backed American Motors' Javelins.
This Bud Moore Trans-Am Race Car with SCCA Roll Bar Number 18159 was the first of three cars constructed by Moore for the 1971 season. The Bud Moore cars were never given a serial number, thus they are identified by their roll-bar inspection number. This car competed as race number 16 during the 1971 season where it was piloted by Peter Gregg, at venues such as Lime Rock, Mid-Ohio, Watkins Glen and Riverside. At the close of the 1971 season, the car was sold to Marshall Robbins for the short seven-race 1972 season for cars over two liters. The car was later sold to Phil Barlett and Ed Ludtke. During the 1980s, the car was restored and prepared for vintage racing.
The car was owned by Fossil Motorsports and sold to John Mozart, who owned it for a number of years prior to selling it to the current owner. The car is powered by a 302 cubic-inch overhead valve V-8 engine producing over 400 horsepower. There is a four-speed manual transmission and four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes. In the front is an independent suspension with coil springs. In the rear is a solid axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs.
In 2009, this Boss 302 Trans-Am Race Car was offered for sale at the Gooding & Company auction in Scottsdale, Arizona where it was estimated to sell for $250,000 - $350,000. The lot was sold for the sum of $407,000 including the buyer's premium.By Daniel Vaughan | Apr 2009
