Auggie and Fred Duesenberg were bicycle racers and builders from Iowa who went on to develop a reputation of building some of the finest race and production cars in the 1920s. Enter the dynamic E.L. Cord, who purchased the Duesenberg Company in 1926 and instructed the brothers to build the world's most magnificent automobile, cost be damned. Approximately 481 Model J chassis were produced. Power was supplied by a Lycoming-built 420 cubic-inch overhead cam four-valve-per-cylinder aluminum-alloy straight-eight producing 285 horsepower, a number unmatched by any other manufacturer at the time. The entire driveline and suspension were engineered like a race car with handling and performance the number one priority.

Duesenberg chassis number 2157 was sold new on November 28th of 1929 at the New York Auto Salon by none other than Fred Duesenberg. It was purchased by Philadelphia Judge Alfred B. North, who commissioned Fleetwood to supply its coachwork. The only Fleetwood-bodied Model J Duesenberg ever built, one can only speculate that North's choice of coachbuilder was influenced by the proximity to Fleetwood located near Reading, Pennsylvania.
