The optional 'Rally' package (option code 9552) allowed the stock 160 horsepower 901/06 engine to be upgraded with 906 cams and connecting rods, and larger carburetors (if desired). A variety of gear ratios were available, along with a competition clutch, sport exhaust, wider alloy wheels, a 100-liter fuel tank, a partial roll bar in the cabin, and competition seats. Additional optional tuning packages included the Sport Kit I and Sport Kit II. The latter increased engine output by 15 horsepower thanks to the different jets and venturis for the Weber 40-millimeter triple-throat carburetors.
This particular 1967 Porsche 911 'Rally' coupe was purchased in late June of 1967 by Hans Niederer of Oxford, New York. It left the factory wearing Sand Beige paintwork, black vinyl upholstery, a five-speed transmission, the 9552 Rally Kit, and safety belts. It was purchased from his local Porsche dealer Jiri Nechleba who also added a pair of Talbot mirrors to the fenders, per Niederer's request.
The car was completed at Zuffenhausen on May 29th of 1967 and delivered three weeks later.
Niederer raced the car in various local and regional SCCA Autocross/Gymkhana events with great success. In early 1969, he began preparing the car for official SCCA C-Production Class racing, which involved adding a partial roll cage, wider Minilite wheels with matching fenders, a quick-fill fuel cap in the bonnet, adjustments to the factory-provided sports suspension, and installed a homemade front spoiler. In this guise, it raced from 1969 to 1974 (again with much success). In 1971, Niederer captured the New York State Sportscar Driver's Championship, as well as the C-Class Production Regional title and Best Regional Driver award from the SCCA.
With sights set on IMSA's sub 2.5-liter GTU-class, Niederer purchased a 2.0-liter, 901/02 racing block (plus other speed parts) from Vasek Polak in January of 1972. With the modifications, Niederer's car remained underpowered and overweight to outpace the professional competition. In 1974, the Polak race engine blew at Watkins Glen. The following year, Niederer parked his 911 in dry storage where it would remain untouched until 2004.
It was purchased by a new custodian who immediately submitted it for a complete and total restoration to its 'as-raced' 1971 SCCA Championship-winning specifications. Upon completion, it was its factory-correct Sand Beige (6607 G) exterior and the interior was similarly redone to Niederer's specifications, complete with many original dash-mounted SSCA racing plaques. The entire suspension system was rebuilt with new Koni shocks and upgraded bushings and braces throughout. Hoosier racing slicks were wrapped around the Minilite magnesium wheels. An ATL fuel cell and fire suppression system were installed, along with Recaro period-style racing seats and an integrated roll cage.
The car is currently powered by a bespoke 2.0-liter twin-plug 901/06 flat six-cylinder engine and paired with a correct-type five-speed transmission.
Since the restoration was completed, this 911 'Rally' COupe has been exhibited at numerous Porsche Club of America events including the Rennsport Reunion V (2015) and Luftgekühlt 7 (2021). It has raced several times at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion under previous ownership. It has its FIA Historic Technical Passport paperwork (issued 13 June 2010), HMSA logbook, and a slew of documentation.By Daniel Vaughan | Dec 2022
