In 1984, Porsche's LeMans winning 956 transformed into the 962, the major difference being the driver's feet were now behind the front axle center line to comply with new IMSA safety regulations. A Porsche 934-derived Type 935 2.8-liter flat-6 was used with air cooling and a single turbocharger, as twin-turbo systems were not allowed in IMSA's GTP class at the time.
The second Porsche factory production 962, chassis 102 was sold to two-time Sebring winner Bob Akin. Sporting bright red Coca Cola livery, he raced the car in the IMSA GTP Championship starting May 1984. The best result was a fourth overall in the 1985 Daytona 24 Hours where Akin co-drove with Hans-Joachim Stuck and Paul Miller.
Unfortunately its racing career came to an end at Charlotte Motor Speedway in May of 1985 when Akin would be collected by a spinning John Paul, Sr. and put into the infield wall. Both drivers would be unhurt, but both cars would have to be retired from competition. Akin replaced the car with chassis 113.
The wrecked chassis was used for show car duties and was displayed in Roger Penske's museum for nearly two decades. The 962 was eventually purchased by Kevin Jeanette of Gunnar Racing who restored No. 102 to its original 1985 cosmetic and mechanical configuration. Soon after the work was completed, chassis 102 was brought out for the 2009 Monterey Historic Races where it was raced by the late Bob Akin's son Bobby.
