Max Hoffman, who also persuaded Porsche to build its Speedster and BMW it 507, persuaded Mercedes-Benz to build the 300SL Gullwing. Austrian-born Hoffman was the driving force behind the importation of interesting European cars in the early 1950s. Based in New York, his engine was boundless, his good taste infinite (both his house and Jaguar showroom had been designed by Frank Lloyd Wright) and his handshake the only bond necessary.

The current owner purchased this 1955 Mercedes-Benz 'Gullwing' 300SL in 1958 and used it while dating his now wife of 48 years. They drove the car to Carmel in 1960 on their honeymoon and returned from Oregon each August to the Monterey Peninsula.
