From 1958 to 1965 Chevrolet's Impala, named after a fast running antelope inhabiting much of southern Africa, was their most expensive full-size car. From 1965 the model range was positioned beneath the 'more luxury' Caprice. The Impala sold well over one million units in 1965 alone, and over thirteen million from 1958 to 1996, making it the world's biggest selling full-size car.

1965 was the first year of the B-body, atop a new unibody, wide perimeter frame, produced in six styles; 2-door coupe, hardtop and convertible and 4-door hardtop, sedan and station wagon. The engine range was wide with a 235 cubic-inch, 135 horsepower six through 427 cubic-inch 425 Turbo Jet v8.
