There were just 4,118 California Specials produced at Ford's San Jose, California assembly plant. This example is a matching numbers example and has spent its entire life in the western United States. It was given a comprehensive documented restoration to original specifications including an engine rebuild. Options include air conditioning, an AM radio, deluxe seat belts, tinted glass and full wheel covers. During the restoration, tilt steering, floor and roof consoles and a wood grain steering wheel were also added. For added performance and style, the GT/CS is equipped with an Edelbrock intake manifold, four-barrel carburetor and dual exhaust system as well as finned aluminum valve covers and a chrome plated air cleaner.
The engine is a 302 cubic-inch V8 with four-barrel carburetor and produces 230 horsepower. There is a C-4 three-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes.
In 2009, this California Special was offered for sale at the Vintage Motor Cars of Meadow Brook presented by RM Auctions. It was estimated to sell for $20,000 - $30,000 and offered without reserve. The lot was sold for the sum of $22,000 including buyer's premium.
