Ford, not satisfied with the 1966 GT-40 MKII win at Lemans, set out to develop a new light weight chassis of honeycomb aluminum. Considered an experimental car, the new GT-40 was simply known as the 'J-car', referring to the Appendix J, or the regulations to which the car was constructed.
To leave nothing to chance, four completely new chassis were constructed for Lemans, 1967. Two (J-5 & J-6) were handed to Shelby American for drivers McLaren/Donohue (#2) and Gurney/Foyt (#1), and two (J-7 & J-8) were entered by Holman & Moody. All were fitted with 7-liter engines and definitive body configuration. These cars were completed during March and April of 1967 and prepared to LeMans specification (FIA Appendix J) for Ford's return as Dearborn designed, built, and prepared cars. The previous year's winner, a Ford MKII, was built at Ford Advanced Vehicles in Slough, England and was a very different design than the more advanced MK IV.
The qualification sessions were dominated by the McLaren/Donohue J-6 clinching the pole. Unfortunately, the J-6 lost time in the pit after the rear body panel blew off down the Mulsanne Straight. The Gurney/Foyt J-5 (#1) finished 1st with a trouble free race and this Ford MK IV J6 (#2), driven by Bruce McLaren and Mark Donohue, finished 4th overall at this 1967 LeMans.
The racing winning J-5 had been painted red and white stripes and was entered by Shelby American. It set new speed and distance records, and were so offensive to the French organizers that attempts were made during the race to bring the car in on technicalities. Failing that, the organizers outlawed engines with over 5-liter displacement, making the MK IV Fords obsolete after their second race and second win.
The J6 (#2) is the only MKIV that finished LeMans that is still running and remains totally original as last raced. This MK IV, J-6, was originally painted yellow with black stripes and was the first MK IV tested at speed at Daytona. It was then driven to victory by Mario Andretti and Bruce McLaren in the MK IV's debut race with the largest lead ever in Sebring history, setting new speed and distance records not broken until the 1969 race. This MK IV was driven by Bruce McLaren and Mark Donohue and finished 4th overall at the LeMans 1967 race.
This J-Car was acquired by Foyt in 1972. In 1990, after it had passed through several other hands, its current owner purchased the car and returned it to its proper yellow paintwork as it was seen at LeMans, its only race. The current owner has put over 40,000 road miles on the MKIV J6 since 1990.
