Monoposto Chassis Num: 2229/017   There were seventy-seven Lotus 22's built in 1962, of which seven were built with the 1500cc Lotus Twin cam engine for Formula 1. This car, number 2229, was sold to South Africa, where it contested the South African Grand Prix in 1963-1965. In 1963, driven by Brausch Niemann, the car qualified 11th and finished 11th. The car DNF'ed in 1964 and DNQ in 1965. Although the car appears to be the same as a Formula Junior, Lotus 22 is, in fact, heavier due to F1 requirements such as a strong frame, heavier engine and gearbox and extra equipment. This car has a four-cylinder engine capable of producing 165 horsepower and 130 foot-pounds of torque. The engine is mated to a Hewland gearbox and an independent suspension.
