This J2X Competition #3144 is an original Cad-Allard that disappeared for over three decades leading many to suspect it was gone forever. It was purchased new in 1953 from Noel Kirk Motors in Hollywood. By 1956, it was yellow and in the movie 'Written on the Wind' as Robert Stack's hot rod. Rock Hudson and Lauren Bacall were #3144's less glamorous co-stars. #3144 was known around the Los Angeles area through the 1960s, after which it simply vanished. It had been purchased by Ron Van Kregten, who was a friend of Howard Hughes. Like Hughes, van Kregten was an accomplished recluse who rarely left his compound and never showed his extensive car collection to anybody. He passed away in 2002 and the current owner purchased the #3144 from his family at auction in 2009. After research, assisted by Allard historians, #3144 was positively identified as the missing 'Written on the Wind' J2X.

A thorough re-commissioning returned #3144 to the road after laying dormant for most of its life. It is finished in its original combination of white with black leather and retains all of its original body, chassis, 331 cubic-inch Cadillac engine, drivetrain, and other components, including the rare disc wheels that were only fitted on two J2X cars.
