For 1968, the GT500 was comprehensively updated with an aggressive new front-end treatment including a lengthened hood line, a rear spoiler was added, air scoops and louvered cooling vents. Also, there were revised head and tail lamps, with the rear units being from the 1965 Thunderbird. Inside was a neatly covered roll bar with an inertia-reel shoulder belts, and for the first time, convertible variants of both the GT350 and the GT500.

This example was delivered new by Jack Loftus Ford Inc. Of Hinsdale, Illinois. It was original finished in red with a saddle interior and white convertible top. The matching numbers 428-cu. in, V8 horsepower is capable of producing 355 horsepower and mated to a factory-installed Ford Toploader four-speed manual transmission.

This is a well maintained restored example and one of just 402 units produced for 1968.

In 2010, this Shelby Mustang GT500 was offered for sale at the Vintage Motor Cars of Meadow Brook presented by RM Auctions. The car was estimated to sell for $125,000 - $175,000. As bidding came to a close, the car had been sold for the sum of $104,500 including buyer's premium.
