The 1997 Ford Mustang was available as a coupe or convertible. There were several trim levels to choose from, including the base, GT, and limited-production Cobra from Ford's Special Vehicle Team (SVT). The base engine was the 3.8 liter V-6 offering 150 horsepower. The GT had a single overhead cam 4.6-liter V8 offering 215 horsepower. The Cobra had an all-aluminum alloy, dual overhead cam V8 with 305 horsepower. Each of these engines were hand built and then signed by the builders.

All vehicles came with the Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS). It used an encoded ignition key with a transponder to electronically disable the engine when the transponder code did not equal a preset code in the Electronic Engine Control System.

The GT models were given a flecked seat fabric pattern. The convertibles had new gray leather seating surfaced replacing the white color. The GT cars rode on new diamond-cut, machined 17-inch cast-aluminum wheels with a dark gray metallic center.

In total, there were 75,760 coupes and 24,490 convertibles produced. 7,475 were Cobra Coupes and 2,525 were Cobra convertibles.
