In 1956, a wealthy socialite walked into Mercedes-Benz's Park Avenue Manhattan dealership with a special request: a new Mercedes-Benz Station Wagon. Normally, this would not have been an unusual request for a domestic car dealer, but Mercedes-Benz did not offer a station wagon at the time. Eager to fulfill the customer's request, a special one-off edition of the 300 series sedan (often referred to as an Adenauer for the 300's most famous passenger, Germany's first post-war chancellor Konrad Adenauer) was commissioned with Daimler-Benz's vendor for commercial/special use vehicles - Binz & Co. Most of the modifications to create this station wagon were handcrafted, but keen enthusiasts will recognize the clever use of 190SL tail lamps in its re-proportioned rear fenders. The interior is equally impressive, with wood grain that surrounds the cockpit and extends across the dashboard, on the doorsills around the flush-fitting chrome window frames and even surrounding the windscreen. It is equipped with a Becker Mexico radio, an in-dash clock and an optional air-conditioning system. It is finished with chrome hardware and thick cockpit.
Legend has it the owner was so fond of her new unique Mercedes-Benz that she had it flow to each of her homes as she traveled.
