1943 Mercedes-Benz 770K Limousine

  • Coachwork by Pullman
  • Chassis Number: 150006/0030
There were nine, non-armored Pullman Limousine W150s produced and this example was ordered by the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Berlin for delivery to the Turkish capital Ankara. The car was intended as a gift from the German government to keep the relationship between the two countries prosperous. When the work was completed, the car was presented to the Turkish President Ismet Inönü at the Chankaya Palace in Ankara by German Ambassador Franz von Papen, who was the former German Vice Chancellor. The car was well received and was immediately adorned with the Turkish government coat of arms.

This 770K Pullman limousine is the last complete 770K produced. The Pullman Limousine coachwork offers a private passenger compartment with ample lighting, streamlined window forms and excellent visibility.

This vehicle was frequently seen in Ankara where it was given the nickname, 'Palace on Wheels.' It stayed with the Turkish government until 1967, at which time it was sold within the country. The next recorded owner was American classic car broker Bob Esbenson, who retained the car for a brief period before passing it along to Manfredo Lippman, the former racing driver and famed collector. Years later, the car was purchased by Ralph Englestad, owner of the Imperial Palace, for display in a Las Vegas car museum. After Mr. Engelstad's passing in 2002, the car was sold to a private collector in Germany, where it has since remained.

Of the nine examples built, this Pullman Limousine is one of only three examples known to exist.
