Chassis number R2 was driven by Jim Clark to a victory on its inaugural outing at the 1967 Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort. The Lotus 49, powered by a Cosworth DFV engine, would score two more Grand Prix victories during the season. It then competed in the Tasman Cup Series where it was given a 2.5-liter engine. It competed in eight rounds and was victorious on four occasions.
In 1968, the car was upgraded to 49B specifications and loaned to privateer entrant Rob Walker, who campaigned it for Jackie Oliver and Jo Siffert. At the end of the season, it was believed the car was scrapped. However, the car was re-discovered in the 1990s by author Michael Oliver. Lotus had sold it to American privateer Pete Lovely in 1969 as a new chassis - chassis number R11. Lovely had raced the car until 1971. It was later sold but later re-purchased to be used in historic racing.
The current owner acquired the car in 2009. The car was treated to a restoration where all of the 49B upgrades and modifications were removed and it was brought back to original Type 49 specifications.By Daniel Vaughan | Apr 2012
